In 1914, Leslie Pickens first hitched his wagon and began expressing baggage between Chicago's first train depots and the Gold Coast. That same year, James Kane began his moving and storage company and would continue to help form Allied Van Lines. In 1946, returning veteran Michael Munroe would first work for then purchase the one truck Pickens operation, and five years later, with the help of a G.I. loan, add the Kane Storage Warehouse Company.

With Mr. Munroe's leadership, innovative style and hard work ethic shared with his employees, the companies merged and grew into one of the largest firms of its kind in the United States.
