Moving can be a hassle, so you do what you can to plan ahead so that moving day goes as smoothly as possible. Unfortunately, sometimes things go wrong at the last minute. What should you do in these instances? Below are four of the most common last-minute moving emergencies, and what you can do to deal with the problem!
You’re Running Out of Time to Pack
With so much to get done before moving day, you might find yourself rushing around to get all your belongings packed—or worse yet—find yourself with tons of belongings that aren’t boxed up and ready to go when the time comes. Here are some things that you can do to speed up the packing process:
- Leave your clothing inside of the dresser drawers. Tape the drawers shut to keep them safely kept inside.
- For cloths that are on hangers, place them carefully inside of plastic bags rather than taking them down and packing them in boxes.
- If you don’t have time for a detailed inventory of your packed items, stick with simple labels. For example, label your boxes as “living room,” “kitchen,” and so on.
Your Place is a Mess
Many people want to leave their house or apartment spic-and-span. However, it can be difficult to get all the cleaning done. If you’re in a crunch and you don’t want to leave a mess behind, ask some friends and family members to help you clean the place up, or hire a professional housekeeper.
Your Furniture Won’t Fit Through the Door
Some furniture items are assembled inside the home, then when it’s time to move them, they won’t fit through the door. The first thing that you can do is see if your furniture can be safely disassembled and reassembled. If not, try another angle. Sometimes you can get bulky items through the door diagonally—just be sure to have plenty of help so you don’t hurt yourself or tear up the furniture. If all else fails, remove the door frame to give you a little more room.
There Isn’t Enough Room in the Moving Truck
It’s not always so easy to anticipate how much space your belongings will take up on a moving truck or van. If you have furniture, appliances, or boxes that won’t fit, don’t worry too much. It can take some work, but you might be able to fit your belongings safely by disassembling large items and stacking the pieces together. You can also try rearranging some of your boxes—just be sure that you are placing durable items on the bottom.
